8th Annual Riverside Jam Concert
to Benefit Local Music Students

The 8th Annual Riverside Jam Concert will take place Saturday, August 4, from 2 p.m. until dark at the Great Barrington Bandstand behind Town Hall. The concert is free and open to the public. Collection boxes will benefit the P.R. Kellerman Foundation, a South-Egremont-based organization that offers need-based music scholarships and practice instruments to Berkshire children.

The Riverside Jam is an annual musical reunion of former bandmates and friends. Started in 1990 with 9 participants in Westport Connecticut, the Riverside Jam has grown to include a core group of more than 30 musicians, many of whom played together in Chicago bands in the 1980s, and some who have joined the group in later years. The concert will feature songs in a wide range of styles from rock to jazz, blues to pop folk and country. This year’s event will also include performances by South County music students and musicians.

The Riverside Jam takes place in a different city each year. This year’s event is hosted by David Hodge and Karen Berger, music teachers in South Egremont. Previous Riverside Jams have taken place in Westport (CT) Chicago (twice), Elkhart, Indiana, Minneapolis, and New Brunswick, New Jersey. This is Riverside second visit to the Berkshires, the first visit being in 2004.

Contributions to fund Riverside Jam are given by the musicians, and the excess is donated to local organizations. This year’s hosts, Karen Berger and David Hodge, of Egremont, are donating all funds to the P.R. Kellerman Foundation. The P.R. Kellerman Foundation commemorates the life of Peter Kellerman, who died in the 9/11 World Trade Center terrorist attacks. Robi Kellerman, Peter’s widow, explains that Peter loved children, music, and the Berkshires, where the couple had a vacation home. The foundation celebrates Peter Kellerman’s life by bringing his passions together and benefiting the community he loved.

This year’s concert kicks off on Saturday, August 4, with a preview performance by Riverside Jam musicians and David Hodge’s guitar students from Berkshire Community College at the Great Barrington Farmer’s Market (11 AM. until 1 PM). At 2 PM., the musicians will move to the Great Barrington Bandstand behind Town Hall and play until dark.
